In January 2001, the tax on sanitary products was reduced from 17.5% to 5%, it was declared that could not be reduced any further due to the fact that when Britain joined the EU in 1973 they signed an agreement not to extend 0% tax ratings to any products other than those already 0% rated at the end of 1975.

However, massive advances not only in sanitary protection but also in equal rights have been made since then, and it is vastly unfair that there is essentially a tax on being a woman. We motion that sanitary products are a necessity (certainly NOT a "luxury item") and should be available tax-free.

Not bleeding on your white trousers, a LUXURY? The government, apparently unable to change VAT on sanitary products are taxing woman. EU legislation states that any product that was not already at a tax rate of 0% at the end of 1975 would not be reduced to any lower than 5%.

The UK sanitary market is worth £100 million per annum, meaning even at a reduced tax rate of 5% women are paying £5 million for the LUXURY of…? We at LIFE campaigns are petitioning for equality. The right not to pay a luxury tax on an essential product. Please sign the petition to show your support for the eradication of TAX-ON-WO-MAN.
