Juveniles are being denied credit by the New York City Family Court system for their time in detention while awaiting the outcome of their cases no matter how much time has elapsed.
How can you lock up a human being for 6 months or a year and then deny them credit for the time? This practice of deny children time detained is a violation of their civil, human and constitutional rights.
We, the undersigned, call on our government, state and city officials to stop the violations of children’s rights by calling for an action that protects children’s civil, constitutional and human rights from unjust punishments by mandating the Family Court system that all time spent in custody pursuant to an offense until they are sentenced to detention for such offense shall be credited.
