#Roads & Transport
Target:
South Carolina General Assembly
Region:
United States of America

On any given day, there can be more than 17, 000 vehicles on campus just belonging to students, faculty and staff. In addition there can be transit buses, vendors, and fans going to sporting events. According to the US Department of Transportation, 6000 people die every year from distracted driving.

A small study on campus showed that drivers texting on campus are 10% more likely to swerve. On June 1, 2010, there was a law passed that banned texting while driving in the city of Clemson, but not on Clemson's campus. Statistics say that texting while driving has a higher incidence rate than drunk driving.

Students should realize the impact that texting and driving has on their safety and the safety of others.

We, the undersigned, call on the South Carolina General Assembly to propose a state wide ban on texting while driving in order to increase public safety.
