Target:
Wigan Metropolitan council/10 Downing Street
Region:
United Kingdom

There are many disused railway trackbeds that are still in existence that were shut by Dr. Beeching in the 1960's - and also later that were used to serve branchlines and pits. The rails no longer exist but as I stated many of the actual trackbeds do.

I see this as a way of reducing traffic and pollution and would like to point out the success of the Oldham & Rochdale extension.

By linking the existing Metrolink in Manchester to outlying areas such as Wigan, Leigh and Golborne it would create a great way of easing congestion and pollution (It was suggested in the unfair congestion scheme that failed that improvements to public transport would be made).

Trams are greener than buses and more accessible for wheelchair users too. Another advantage is that a tram can carry far more passengers than any car.

We, the undersigned, petition the authorities of Wigan metropolitan council to implement an extension of the Metrolink system from Wigan, Hindley, Leigh and Golborne to join the existing Manchester/Bury/Oldham network using as many existing trackbeds as possible.
