The Conservative administration of Brighton & Hove City Council proposes to remove the cycle lanes which run along The Drive and Grand Avenue. They were installed by the last Labour administration.
Ÿ
There are serious safety concerns with the cycle lane. Thankfully, the number of accidents have dropped slightly over the last couple of years but there were still 42 casualties between 2008 and 2010.
Ÿ
The administration does not expect removal of the lane to cost anything like the £1.1 million which has been budgeted for.

The proposed funding for the removal is from the City’s transport capital allocation for next year, which is significantly higher than it was last year. It is not a simple question of choosing to either spend it on removing the cycle lane or on, for example, funding
children’s services.

Bricycles stated in their submission to the consultation at the time that ‘Grand Avenue is currently not a difficult road to cycle in for people with average cycling skills.’ Cyclists report that this complete segregation is actually counter-productive as it makes both drivers and cyclists less aware of each other.

Safer alternative routes will be sought.

The Conservative administration of Brighton & Hove City Council supports safe cycling in our City.

Safer cycling is not encouraged by the badly designed,
dangerous and disruptive cycle lanes along The Drive and Grand Avenue, Hove.

The cycle lanes are little used, and many cyclists who do use this route prefer to cycle on the road rather than the cycle lanes, reflecting their suspicion of the safety of the design.

I hereby register my support for Brighton & Hove's Conservative proposal to remove the cycle lanes down The Drive & Grand Avenue and seek alternative routes.
