It is necessary to take action to prevent possible deadly traffic related accidents. The State Traffic Safety Information (NHTSA) found that 7% of Alabama's traffic fatalities are pedestrian related fatalities. In 2008, the Pedestrian death toll in Alabama was 72 and the injuries totaled 468.
Many University of North Alabama students living in Fraternity Houses and On-Campus Apartments walk across Pine Street in order to get to class. UNA Greek life represents slightly less than 10% of the undergraduate student population.
There is no alternative walking route from North Cedar Street to the University of North Alabama campus.
We, the undersigned, call on the University of North Alabama and the City of Florence, Alabama to provide a skywalk that will extend over Pine Street for the primary purpose of permitting safe pedestrian travel over a main road.
