The Fairbairn Road Workshop was originally established as a 'training for work' program, where young adults with special needs are trained in a real working environment. They produce high quality timber and metal products, which are then sold to the public as non-profit items.

West Lothian Council have recently proposed the closure of Fairbairn Road as part of their savings initiative, due to the recent budget cuts. This is yet another attack on the Fairbairn Road workshop, following the removal of £2 bonus payments in 2008.

The young adults have been working unpaid since then, and the proposal to permanently close the workshop is another attack on the county's vulnerable. The workshop and its clients are something WLC should be proud of, not striving to destroy.

We, the undersigned, ask West Lothian Council to support the vulnerable, and keep the Fairbairn Road workshop open and restore it to its full working potential.
