Calma on Rapanui
Petition published by Grant McCall on Dec 06, 2010
Target: Chilean Embassy Canberra Australia
Region: International
Petition Background (Preamble):
Rapanui (Easter Island) has been associated with Chile since 1888, when a bi-lingual treaty was signed between the two governments, island and mainland.
Since 1966, Rapanui have been full citizens of Chile, enjoying all rights in that country and on their island.
However, there are some strong feelings on the Rapanui side that they need to have their land issue better managed; they need to have greater control over immigration and settlement; and, they want a greater degree of autonomy in local decision making.
The Government of Chile has been listening and there is an autonomy statute pending in the Chilean Congress.

Petition:
We the undersigned urge the Government of Chile to demonstrate its two centuries traditions (in 2010) of citizen freedom, social justice and human rights to work with the Rapanui people for a peaceful and consensual outcome to the current tense and delicate situation.
