Raising awareness for poverty in Toronto. There are many contributing factors that lead to poverty, and it is a vicious circle that is very difficult to break out of. A huge problem Toronto's citizen's face is a lack of housing, so what should Toronto do about it?

Did you know?

37% of children from 0 to 14 years of age live in poverty in Toronto.

- These children are 3.5 times more likely to get involved in crimes, twice as likely to develop chronic illnesses, have school issues and at greater risk for hyper activity and emotional disorders.

5,000 people a night are homeless, sleeping on the streets or are currently living in shelters.

- It costs $48,000 a year to keep people on the street, and only $28,000 to put them into subsidized housing.

1 in 7 women in Canada live in poverty, that is approximately 2.4 million women.

- Women that live in poverty are more likely to experience violence and abuse.

How many women do you know?

The use of food banks has increased by 79% since 1995.

- In march alone 867, 948 Canadians used food banks and 38% of those were children.

2 thirds of those who are homeless struggle with alcoholism, either previous to or resulting from their situation of homelessness.

- Canadians as a whole spend approximately $12.4 billion a year on alcohol.

In comparison to this - how much does the government spend on homelessness/housing?

- In 2009 the federal government invested approximately $3.5 billion on homelessness and affordable housing initiatives.

We, the residents of Ontario, express our deep concern with the growing poverty rate in Ontario which in result has left many residents of this province homeless.

We are appealing to the Government of Ontario to invest more money into the Ministry of Housing by providing more affordable housing and more shelters across the province to take people off the streets and give them one of the basic necessities of life, shelter.

We will continue to work assiduously to seek necessary funding for the housing and continue to raise awareness about poverty until the appropriate measures are met to ensure residents of Ontario are living healthy and comfortable and not on the streets.

Sincerely,
The Citizens
