The Birth of Image project is a non-profit initiative where young people for the first time in their life receive a comprehensive learning programme for new media and audiovisual skills.
The volunteers of Birth of Image have drafted a "Birth of Image Manifesto" for taking a stand on the role and use of new media in our daily life.
Birth of Image Manifesto for New Media Literacy
I fully agree to the following manifesto:
1) Media is a combination of images, sounds and text, created by people, for people.
2) Media creates relationships between people.
3) Media is a tool that people communicate with.
4) Media allows to share your message globally.
5) We understand that a lot of media can be networked.
6) We believe it is a basic right that we have opportunities, in both formal, informal and non-formal education, to develop skills and knowledge related to media, communication with media, and networks of sharing media. Regardless of disabilities, status, religion etc.
7) We believe that “media literate” young people are able to
- participate in society using media for communication
- understand how and why others produce media
- notice manipulation and react to it out of personal choice
- use media creatively to express ideas and information
- choose what media they want to see/hear in daily life
- use media for claiming their rights as citizens
- see media as a teaching and learning process
8) We agree to share what we know with others.
9) We want to allow everyone to have the space to choose what media they use / watch / hear.
10) Media has a direct and everyday effect on our life. Because of this awareness and critical thinking are necessary skills for all, especially youth.
11) We want to create an opportunity for youth to take action on realising their ideas using media.
