Nuclear power is not safe, not cheap, not sustainable and not needed. Government support for new nuclear power stations will amount to several billion pounds. At a time when piblic expenditure cuts are having a serious impact on the weakest and most vulnerable in society this support is not justufied. See www.nomoney4nuclear.org.uk for more details of our case.
We believe that the government should make good on its pledge not to support nuclear power with money from the public purse.
We therefore call upon them to:
a. remove the underwriting of the nuclear industry’s insurance cost immediately by increasing the threshold above which the government takes responsibility in the case of accidents to at least £1 billion, in line with the Secretary of State’s promises,
b. Remove the support that the industry would receive from the various carbon trading and emissions trading schemes unless it is linked to the carbon produced over the whole life cycle of generation, including the mining and enrichment of uranium and waste disposal, and
c. Examine and report on the other government support received by the industry and how this support is to be removed, in line with government promises.
