Supermarkets and Food Producers in Europe - indeed, all over the world - are selling us halal slaughtered meat and other products without our knowledge.
We are demanding compulsory halal labelling to be introduced for all food producers and supermarkets in the EU and elsewhere.
Customers have a right to know what they are eating - especially whether the meat they eat has been slaughtered according to Islamic halal methods.
Food producers and supermarkets have a moral responsibility to provide customer choice. Their 'de facto' decision to sell halal without adequate labelling is an insult to the customer's right to choose on three grounds:
1) Religious grounds: The assumption non-Muslims should be compelled to adhere to the Islamic food standards - without any practical choice in the matter - is utterly unacceptable.
2) Animal Welfare Grounds: Halal slaughter means animals are not stunned prior to slaughter, and hence they are subject to undue suffering.
3) Customer Choice Grounds: Food producers and supermarkets provide a wealth of food about our food and its ingredients (salt, additives, etc.). It is, therefore, unacceptable that they refuse to provide labelling information on such an important and contentious issue as halal.
Therefore, we demand adequate labelling for all halal products and the introduction of compulsory standards to enforce them.
