On St. Simons Island a developer has applied to have land at the corner of South Harrington and Frederica rezoned to allow a Publix and several other stores. We don't dislike Publix or the developer.
We just don't think this is the right place for the shopping center for a number of reasons.
The signatures here oppose the rezoning of the Bennie's Red Barn property (at the Southeast corner of South Harrington and Frederica roads).
It would allow a 45,600-square-foot Publix store and other shops to be built. It would include hundreds of parking spaces over acres of asphalt, cause flooding and create unsafe traffic situations.
