Save Stockwell Studios / Former Annie McCall Hospital
This petition was published by Stockwell Studios on Apr 07, 2010
We, the undersigned, strongly support the organisation Stockwell Studios in their argument that they should remain in their current home (the former Annie McCall Hospital) as onsite custodians until a scheme is developed that preserves the landmark site for the good of the community.
• Evicting the studios would effectively close our organisation down.
• It would jeopardise the livelihoods of the 24 current studio members and end the possibility of future generations of artists and crafts people using the site.
• It would end the vital outreach work that has been undertaken by the studios over its 22-year history, severing links to local community groups and schools.
• It would put an end to the various projects currently underway in the garden, these include a nature trail, a wetland area and beehives.
• It would inevitably lead to the loss of a unique building. The Annie McCall Hospital was the first of its kind, the first maternity hospital designed and run entirely by women.
• In the short term it would endanger the local community, as mothballing the site would make it vulnerable to crime and vandalism.
• We are worried that the site will be developed to satisfy the short-term needs of commercial developers who would seek to maximise profit over public benefit.
