Don't let them put small businesses out of business! Become part of the growing movement for revitalized communities, secure jobs and the healthy green future we deserve!
In signing the pledge below I am asking you to reject attempts to establish a government sponsored program of predatory gambling in Massachusetts. This industry is harmful to local business; undermines sound job growth; fosters addiction, bankruptcy, crime, divorce and other social problems; increases greenhouse gas emissions; and worsens over-development and open space encroachment. These problems will cost us far more than can be recovered from gambling revenues.
I am also dismayed that Speaker DeLeo is attempting to ram his bill through the Legislature without the customary public hearings. It is a sad sign of the state of our democracy that an effort is being made to avoid public scrutiny and debate on the particulars of a bill that would so profoundly alter our economy and communities.
For my own part, I pledge not to patronize gambling casinos or slot parlors in Massachusetts. I pledge to strongly encourage my children and family members to avoid such establishments. I pledge to direct my discretionary expenditures instead into locally-owned, productive businesses that are good neighbors in the community, which do not exploit workers, the environment or those with addictions, and which are integral parts of the healthy local economy we so desperately need and richly deserve.
