Keep Newtown Family Safe & Animal Friendly Say “No” to Deer Culls
We, the undersigned citizens of Newtown, wish to express our strong opposition to deer culls in our community. We understand there are concerns raised by the number of deer in Newtown. However, a lengthy and sustained deer slaughter in town--including on open space, the very land Newtown residents use for hiking and outdoor recreation--poses significant risk.
Tick borne diseases are a serious problem and we urge Newtown’s representatives to pursue a thoughtful solution to them rather than blindly following other towns in Fairfield County that have instituted inhumane and costly deer culls. None of these towns have produced any evidence that killing deer has had any measurable effect on reducing tick borne diseases or increasing public safety in their communities.
We urge our Board of Selectmen, Health Department Officials and other relevant committees to consider the science of the matter rather than capitulate to the special interest groups lobbying for deer culls. We strongly oppose the use of our tax dollars for deer cull programs and cannot support the expenditure of town funds if they would directly or indirectly support the killing of deer in our community.
