Every single one of us, love Sir Alex Ferguson
Published by David Hall on Oct 07, 2009
We, the undersigned are calling on Mr Alan Leighton, National Secretary of Prospect, to retract a recent statement and issue a full and public apology to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, following comments made on a UK radio station.
Mr Leighton has called on the Football Association to kick Mr Ferguson out of football, after he made ' allegations' toward a football official.
It is our view that Mr Leighton is extremely biased in his wording, and there has to be doubt that Mr Leighton is making logical and level-headed claims, considering similar comments from Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allerdyce during their match at Arsenal, afterwhich Mr Allerdyce labelled match official Peter Walton 'unfit'.
Mr Ferguson was merely voicing his opinion - a shared opinion in our view - that England's referreeing standard is not up to that in Europe.
Mr Leighton, Prospect, and the FA would do well to remember that Mr Ferguson didn't only receive an Knighthood for his services to Manchester United, but for his services to football - and the pressure which was put on Manchester United to take part in the World Club Cup Championships in 1999 to aid England's World Cup bid.
Mr Ferguson has helped change the face of football for the good, and we, the undersigned, are of the opinion that it is only because of Mr Ferguson's standing within the game that he is once more being singled out for unjust punishment.
The FA have been urged to support their 'Respect' campaign, so that referees are protected.
Respect will only work both ways, and Mr Leighton has shown none on this occasion.
Managers are under intense pressure to succeed in a results driven business, and it's unfortunate a poor refereeing decision can cost a Manager his job.
Therefore, we demand Prospect enforce a retraction of Mr Leighton's comments, and in turn, he issue a full and public apology to Sir Alex Ferguson.
