There was a new bill passed back in 2006/2007, which removed all speed limit signs and changed the speed limits on dirt/gravel roads. Because of this bill, we went from 25 mph to 55 mph.
According to MCL 257.628 of the Michigan Vehicle Code sets the statewide maximum speed limit on all unposted highways at 55 mph. Gravel roads are included in this.
Which means drivers can and sometimes do drive 55 mph on our road without being considered speeding. Our road has many curves, hidden driveways and other factors that make this dangerous not only for the drivers but also for the residents that live on our road.
This makes walking down the road with your family dangerous, children walking to the bus stop when its still dusk out is in danger because the drivers are unaware of the children in the area, hidden driveways, curves or any other condition. All the drivers are aware of is the speed limit is 55 mph.
As a resident on the road, I am asking you to join me as I sign this petition and ask the lawmakers to change our speed limit back to 25 mph, give us more sign age to hopefully educate and making drivers on our road more aware.
1. We have children in the area that may need to be on the road, walking to the school bus stop, getting to & from a neighbor's house.
2. We have people who walk/jog, ride there bikes, families that walk, people who walk there dogs.
3. We have hidden driveways, which you cannot see until you are in front of them.
4. Curves & hills on the road that impede visibility.
We would like to see speed limit signs (25 mph), along with hidden driveways, caution children, Children in the area, Curves any thing that would make drivers aware that they should drive with caution on our road. We need to have some sign age before someone is killed. We are not asking for anything that cannot be done without little effort.
