The petition of residents and supporters of the electorate of Lake Macquarie NSW brings to the attention of the House, a demand that the Minister of Planning uphold a promise made to the community, and correct the misleading definitions in the State Environmental Planning Policy (Mining, Petroleum Production and Extractive Industries) 2007 (SEPP), to ensure a clear distinction between underground and open-cut mining operations so that the SEPP can function as intended to ban all new open-cut activities in the Lake Macquarie area.
The petition also requires that the Premier ensures that this is done.
The undersigned petitioners ask the Legislative Assembly to direct the Department of Planning to clarify the SEPP to preclude any legal or technical interpretations which evade the ban on new open-cut mining activities in the Lake Macquarie area.
