Remove Pontius Pilates' name from the Apostle's Creed

I believe we have continually wronged Pontius Pilate, by professing that Jesus Christ died under him every time we recite the Apostles' Creed.

In all gospel accounts, Pilate hesitates to condemn Jesus, but is eventually forced to give in when the crowd insists and the Jewish leaders remind him that Jesus's claim to be king is a challenge to Roman authority. Roman magistrates had wide discretion in executing their tasks, and some readers question whether Pilate would have been so captive to the demands of the crowd. Pilate was later recalled to Rome for his harsh treatment of the Jews.[Miller, 49–50][Wise, Isaac Mayer (1880). Though I believe that the whole Christian community has forgiven Pilate for his participation in the suffering of Christ, the inclusion of his name while we recite the Apostles' Creed still binds him to those acts.

Pilate had a change of heart and became a Christian in fact his wife Claudia was canonized as a saint in the Greek Orthodox Church.

In line with forgiveness and the process of reconciliation, I urge you to sign this petition and ultimately release Pilate and all generations under him from this bondage.
