Dear peers,
By now many of you have heard about the anonymous letter written in the May 2, 2008 issue of the Conglomerate. As a Centenary student of five years, I have taken the majority of the courses offered by the Health and Exercise Science Department and was outraged to read the opinion given by the anonymous writer. As an advisee of Dr. Armstrong's I have been properly paced to graduate with all course and core requirements completed by my expected graduation date. Her courses, and those of Dr. LeFevers and Dr. Henderson have adequately prepared me to continue my education and the graduate level. The article, Student criticizes Health and Exercise Science Department can be viewed at: http://www.theccconglomerate.com/
I have written a petition, and invite all of you who agree with its content to sign it. The text of the petition is provided below.
I plan to collect as many signatures as I can in a speedy fashion and send this petition to those in administrative positions on campus. Our Centenary identity is only in jeopardy of losing its fine name if the people at the top continue to only think of themselves and forget about all the dedicated professors who keep this College in tact.
We, the undersigned write to convey our highest possible support for the Centenary Health and Exercise Science Department.
We believe that the Conglomerate article, Student criticizes the Health and Exercise Science Department, was an attack towards our Departments (1.5) professors, primarily Dr. Armstrong. While this anonymously written article brings up valid points its direction should be aimed more towards the Administration who place our dedicated professors in the over worked positions that they are in.
We all realize that a Centenary education is far from cheap but do not believe blame should be placed on our underpaid professors for the lack of classes being offered each semester. It is our understanding that the Health and Exercise Science department (Dr. Armstrong), have tried to make the most out of our under staffed Department by reaching out to adjunct professors.
What better way to learn about Nutrition than by a licensed nutritionist? We understand that the current advising contracts are not setting us as students up for failure but rather to give us the responsibility to make decisions regarding our working progress towards graduation.
We realized that our advisors are in place to guide us towards gradation not do the work for us. We feel that the fact that our Departments 1.5 professors are responsible for an entire Department of advisee’s is due to decision making of Centenary’s Administrative staff.
We believe the there has not been a loss in the essence of teaching due to job security. We feel strongly that Dr. Armstrong and Dr. Henderson do not display character that would not provide a lack of support for potential deserving teaching candidates.
As Health and Exercise Science majors we hope that Centenary’s Administrative leaders would make hiring decisions in support of students. We have watched former peers leave Centenary and continue their education to Graduate schools and feel that our current professors have continued to adequately prepare us for post-Centenary education.
In conclusion, we are proud members of the Health and Exercise Science Department that not only support our peers but also our leaders, Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Henderson, and Dr. LeFevers.
We do hope that those individuals who hold Administrative positions would make decisions that honor the students and dedicated professors of all Departments across campus.
