Eco-terrorism is defined by the FBI'S Domestic Terrorism Section as "the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally-oriented, subnational group for environmental-political reasons. The Sea Sheppard Society Clearly falls into this category and in the past, has used fear, violence and intimidation to achieve their goals.
This group, on many occasions, has rammed, sunk, and illegally boarded other vessels. Their Leader, Paul Watson, Has been charged with attempted murder in Cuba (fled and escaped the Cuban coast guard) and has spent time in prisons for violent acts in both Canada and the Netherlands.
Most recently, During the annual seal hunt, The Sea Sheppard Society Has broken Canadian law by coming too close to hunting activities, and is tying up the services of the Canadian Coast Guard on a daily basis.
We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, to put in force a law, that will prohibit the Sea Sheppard Society, It's leader Paul Watson, and other similar organizations from entering certain NAFO (Northwest Atlantic Fishery Organization) areas in order to interfere with the annual Canadian seal hunt.
These Organizations Have admittedly used violence in the past to achieve their goals, and as Newfoundlanders both For and Against the seal hunt, we believe the safety of our people is at stake.
We urge the government to respond to this petition and ban these radical organizations from NAFO areas 2J3KL, 3Pn4RS, 3PS, and from any port within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
